The artist who inspired us in our sweatshirt and t-shirt designs with his designs, ideas and intelligence is Hüseyin Çağlayan!
Hüseyin Çağlayan is a British fashion designer of Turkish Cypriot origin. He has won the British Designer of the Year award twice and was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2006.
Presenting fashion as a field of discovery where concepts find expression, Hüseyin Çağlayan challenges the preconceptions about what clothing means. He sets out from the political, economic and social realities of today's world and creates designs that present conceptual ideas with a philosophical positioning, drawing inspiration from disciplines that are difficult to directly relate to fashion. While the clothes he designs reflect the thought processes behind them, his highly acclaimed fashion shows serve as performances. In addition to his fashion collections, he also creates installations, directs short films and designs costumes for stage performances.
Previously exhibited at the Design Museum in London and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, the exhibition curated by Donna Loveday brings together Hüseyin Çağlayan’s fashion collections, installations and films produced between 1994 and 2010. The works in this important selection reflect Hüseyin Çağlayan’s thoughts on various areas such as genetics, technological progress, displacement, immigration and cultural identity, drawing inspiration from architecture, philosophy, science, history, anthropology, biology and technology.
Short Biography: Born in 1970 in Nicosia, Cyprus, Çağlayan began his education in Cyprus and continued in London. He graduated from Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design in London in 1993. His extremely creative graduation collection, called Tangent Flows, attracted great attention at the time. This collection consisted of silk garments covered in iron filings, buried in the ground and retrieved months later. The collection was later exhibited in the window of Browns department store in London and made Çağlayan a name for himself as an innovative designer. After establishing his own brand in 1994, he was twice named Designer of the Year in the UK.
